FARCROSS WORKPACKAGES

This work package sets out the ‘ethics requirements’ that the project must comply with.

Objectives

• To effectively monitor the project, in administrative, technical and financial terms, to ensure its strategic and everyday
management and to offer the necessary interface to the EU services and external actors.
• To guarantee the adherence of the work to the overall project plans, available resources and timing.
• To ensure the high quality of FARCROSS outcomes assuring that the project development will be in line with existing
and emerging application guidelines and enabling the smooth execution of activities.
• To ensure legal compliance of FARCROSS outcomes.
• To identify project risks by performing an effective risk management and risk mitigation actions.
• To put into place effective innovation management mechanisms and to effectively handle IPR issues.
• To identify and analyze the innovation potential of FARCROSS.

Objectives

• To ensure that the technologies developed in FARCROSS can be used by plant and system operators to operate
successfully in modern power markets;
• To ensure that the technologies can make a significant contribution to European renewable energy objectives and
policies;
• To analyse the regulatory, policy and technical environment that surrounds the demonstration projects to identify
barriers to commercial exploitation and the impact on the system operator, including analysis of background knowledge
and current best practices for flexibility provision;
• To provide an implementable framework that will help operators and producers to access ancillary services revenue
streams, including recommendations for regulators and system operators to assist them in adopting the functionality
and services offered by the demonstration projects.

Objectives

• To design and customise a power flow control solution for inter-TSO demonstration;
• To increase cross-border network transfer capacity with the use of advanced power flow systems;
• To reduce RES curtailment;
• To test ability to increase market coupling with modular power flow control solutions.

Objectives

• To develop and integrate DLR techniques and Health Monitoring systems which can analyse and predict residual
service life and safe operation of the transmission lines with the associated risk;
• To demonstrate a complex grid management technology for available surplus transfer capacity, risk of operational
safety, economical aspects, legal authorization process and last, but not least, the social acceptance;
• To identify improvements of different way of measurement of two different type of dynamic line rating sensors to
utilize better the limited cross-border capacities;
• To review required features of sensor testing protocols and integrated DLR and Health Monitoring system guidelines,
proposed for standardization.

Objectives

• To increase power system security in scenarios with increasing share of renewables, enhancing fault detection
capabilities at regional level;
• To identify and apply most suitable methods for identification, measurement and damping inter-area oscillations,
specially focused on border connections;
• To design, test and demonstrate the associated communication architecture and specific protocols for the required
gathering of real-time measurements;
• To design, develop and evaluate the performance of a Wide-Area Measurement, Protection and Control system, focused
on cross-border areas, able to act as backup protection and contributing to damp inter-area oscillations.

Objectives

• To develop improved RES generation and demand response forecasting algorithms and calculation tools in order to
minimize the variability sources on the network;
• To improve operational planning-forecasting of RES/Demand response on a regional level through a unified approach
based on weather forecast and geospatial data;
• To introduce innovative short-term (15’, 1h, 3h) and long-term (5-day) forecast engines for both RES and demand
response forecast side through improvements of the tools for analysis and grid operations simulations of the system
at regional level;
• To deliver better network security margins (i.e., more reliable determination of reserve requirements in a timely and
secure manner) and increase the level of the observation abilities;
• To enable new additional resources for cross border grid balancing services (IN, FRRs, RR);
• To support the participation of energy stakeholders with diverse portfolios in intraday and real-time markets involving
several TSOs with accurate prediction engines.

Objectives

• To review required features of a co-optimized cross-border transmission capacity allocation market derived from
current national reserve capacity markets, the related Guidelines and TSO-led balancing market integration projects;
• To develop the co-optimized market design for energy-reserve auctions of cross-zonal capacity with reserve capacity
products aligned with implicit transmission capacity allocation to fit in the conceptual market framework;
• To identify improvements for calculating transmission capacity requirements for reserve allocation with an assessment
using a regional transmission network model calculation;
• To develop a scalable, high-performance prototype for the co-optimized approach of auctioning the available
transmission capacity to both energy and reserve allocation based on the bid matching algorithm formulae and
description;
• To demonstrate the advantages of novel approach that enables an optimized, twin energy-reserve usage of available
capacity between bidding zones.

Objectives

• To evaluate the results of demonstration projects, in respect with targets set at the beginning of the project;
• To comment on the implementation hurdles comparatively among demonstration projects and justify any deviations
from targets;
• To develop a detailed scalability and replicability plan at EU level for the innovations proposed in the project.

Objectives

• To involve stakeholders and ensure clustering with BRIDGE and relevant projects at EU level;
• To develop strategies necessary to convert the results of the project into added value for society, for policy makers
and industry;
• To develop a quantitative/qualitative assessment of the impact of the results;
• To ensure wide dissemination and communication to all potential interested parties and the widest audience during
and after the FARCROSS lifecycle.
