The specific purpose of this report was the investigation and identification of an appropriate location to install MPFC which facilitates the increase in cross-border capacity. The specific technology being investigated is Smart Wires’ SmartValve, which is a modular Static Synchronous Series Compensator (mSSSC) device. This technology has a number of important features that were used to build the potential deployment options. These include the ability to push and pull power in either heavily or lightly loaded lines, flexible deployment options and a range of control options. Four different deployment locations were identified by the Operations Department in IPTO. Additional MPFC deployments may also be effective at supporting cross-border capacity, however this selection reflected circuits with significant disparity in line loadings between several parallel routes.
