The EuroPan Demo is the subject of WP7  with the goal to produce improved system operation planning/forecasting and analysis tools – on the inter-TSO level. The effort starts from the capability of the FARCROSS partners to derive accurate weather forecasting at a high level of spatial resolution, such that models of RES generation and load forecasting reach high accuracy results. These model-predictions of power are then fed as input to power flow analysis tools to support TSO operation and cross border collaboration.

Early on, the FARCROSS partners have teamed-up to start the system design and the analysis of requirements, while working in parallel on the technical implementation and the data needed for the model parameter tuning and simulation results’ validation.

The weather forecasting results are already under comparison with existing historic data – several months ahead of schedule – to determine the appropriate model parametrization for given geographic idiosyncrasies. Additional data are collected from the responsible TSOs on specific Points of Interest to trim the model parameters on the areas with a real-life interest.

LineVision, Inc. recently announced its expansion into Europe and a partnership with the European Commission-funded FARCROSS consortium. The company will work with four FARCROSS utility participants in Hungary, Greece, Slovenia, and Austria to deploy advanced sensors and analytics for transmission line monitoring.

With respect to the COVID-19 imposed restrictions the 1rst Plenary meeting that was scheduled to take place in Vienna March 25th and 26th was replaced by a virtual one using teleconference tools.

Farcross project has been represented successfully in the Bridge General Assembly, which took place on the 11th and 12th of February at the European Commission, by Mr. George Boultadakis from EUROPEAN DYNAMICS (ED).

The 1st WorkPackage 5 meeting took place in Vienna on the 20, of January 2020.

WP5 of FARCROSS aims to:

⚡ Develop and integrate DLR techniques and Health Monitoring systems which can analyze and predict residual service life and safe operation of the transmission lines with the associated risk;

 ⚡ Demonstrate a complex grid management technology for available surplus transfer capacity, risk of operational safety, economical aspects, legal authorization process and last, but not least, the social acceptance;

⚡ Identify improvements of a different way of measurement of two different types of dynamic line rating sensors to utilize better the limited cross-border capacities;

⚡ Review required features of sensor testing protocols and integrated DLR and Health Monitoring system guidelines, proposed for standardization.

FARCROSS synopses submission to the Conference of the South East European Regional Council of CIGRE, SEERC, in Vienna (16-19 June 2020)  has been accepted. Therefore the full paper is now being prepared for submission in late February, with the final notification to be received in late April regarding FARCROSS registration at the conference.

The FARCROSS consortium met in Athens 23rd and 24th of October 2019. The meeting was completed, and relevant sub-tasks were allocated to partners. Discussion with all partners regarding the cross-border cooperation took place and  Smart grid innovations to increase cross-border capacity were discussed in detail. In general, a fruitful discussion took place and the meeting was considered a success.
